The Römerholz collection

The Oskar Reinhart collection comprises around 200 works of European art from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries. A selection of outstanding paintings of Old Masters (such as Mathis Gothart Nithart, called Matthias Grünewald, and Lucas Cranach the Elder) is combined with important works of nineteenth-century French painting, which constitute the main strength of the collection. The art collector Oskar Reinhart left the collection and his villa to the Swiss Confederation in his will dated 26 February 1958. The museum that came out of this bequest was opened to the public in 1970.
