A new exhibition series
At the beginning of November the Oskar Reinhart Collection 'Am Römerholz' is launching a series of presentations that each focus on one individual artwork in the collection. It will primarily be rarely exhibited items that will, for a short time, find themselves in the limelight. Presented individually in a separate room and supplemented with explanatory information, they offer the visitor a unique opportunity to learn more about particular works. In addition, on Wednesday evenings there will be special tours dedicated both to the significance of the work and to related aspects such as painting techniques, which shed further light on the work's significance within the artist's oeuvre in dialog with contemporary artists and specialists.
The series begins with the presentation of a painting by Gustave Courbet, the Forest Scene with Stream, from after 1855.
It shows an enchanted ravine known as Puits-Noir not far from Courbet's home town of Ornans, which the artist captured on canvas in almost countless versions. Time and again he returned to this subject of woodland solitude, a place of withdrawal and tranquility - a world in contrast to the growing challenges of urban society. At the same time, it was with this subject that Courbet developed his own artistic fingerprint, which brings the observer up close to the depiction in an almost palpable way.
